On August 17, 2022, at 12:00pm, Chloe Marie will join the National Agricultural Law Center in their webinar series for her presentation, “An Overview of Geographical Indications and their Impacts on U.S. Agriculture.”

As description of the webinar, as provided by the National Agricultural Law Center:

“A geographical indication is a name or sign on a product packaging and is used to identify that a product originates from a specific geographical territory and has unique features or reputation originating from that geographical location. Geographical indications (GI) allow producers to ensure their rights are respected in the market place and avoid unfair trade competition. Agricultural product names are often composed of a geographical location and the extent to which that name is given legal recognition has a significant impact on international trade, especially international dairy trade.

The enforcement of the European GI program has been of particular concern to the U.S. agricultural sectors, especially over the designations of origin of products as well as wines and spirits and claims that it has created barriers to trade. In this webinar, the Center for Agricultural and Shale Law will explain the concept of GIs and the distinction between U.S. and European laws and regulations governing GIs as it relates to the U.S. agricultural sector and will also address the indirect impacts between the U.S. and other trading partners, which also trade with the E.U., such as Canada and Mexico.”
